Hot and Humid Weather: Message from the Superintendent

Recently I was asked about closing school or following an early release schedule due to hot and humid weather. In the Huron City School District we, just as in winter, monitor the local forecast to remain current on weather conditions. Advances in radar and weather forecasts provide us with valuable tools when making decisions about the status of school. While there is no law or district policy setting a temperature threshold, in Huron we monitor and follow all health and safety warnings that may be issued by local or county officials. Included in the decision making process, we will communicate with our neighboring school districts, sharing information to ensure the best decision is made.

When the forecast calls for hot and humid conditions we encourage parents to send their children to school with a water bottle. Our staff does a phenomenal job monitoring student activity and providing frequent breaks for rest and water. In buildings without air conditioning, windows are open and fans are utilized to keep a consistent flow of air.

We understand that changes in school schedules create a tremendous burden on families. The decision to close school will be made only when it is a necessity. We are committed to making the best possible decision with the information we have in the early morning hours. My goal is to reach a decision about closing by 5:30 a.m.
