After extensive research and discussion with the staff, Woodlands Intermediate School has decided to pilot a Bring Your Own Device initiative (BYOD). Students will be allowed to use their own technology in the classrooms when the teacher determines that it is useful for instruction.
Devices can certainly be a benefit for students, but devices can also cause disruption to the "normal" school day. These devices can certainly help us to reach our educational goals in regards to differentiating instruction, authentic assessment, 21st Century Skills, and engagement in our classroom spaces. Technology isn’t meant to replace teaching but enhance the learning process.
Currently, students have access to many types of electronic devices including iPads, iPods, laptops, chromebooks, tablets, and cell phones. The ideal device would allow students to access the internet, and have a battery life that would last the school day. Students are responsible for their own device and the handbook rules and Acceptable Use Policy still apply while using the devices at school.
