Special Education

OUR MISSION

Huron City School District is dedicated to the education of all students. Our commitment to excellence is enhanced through our work in individualizing the educational experiences to meet the needs of students identified with disabilities. We believe that with partnership and dedication, collaborative efforts between teachers, administration, families, and students will yield results that maximize potential. Continually developing a culture of equity, we work to maintain a supportive, culturally responsive, and inclusive school environment for diverse groups of learners.

What is Special Education?
Special education is specially designed instruction, support, and services provided to students with an identified disability, requiring individually designed instructional programs to meet their unique learning needs. The purpose of special education is to support student development and success by providing Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Local school districts are required by federal and state laws to find children who may need special education services and related services (Child Find) and then to provide those services free of charge (Free Appropriate Public Education). Child Find is the process of locating, evaluating, and identifying children with disabilities who may be in need of special education and related services.
